Dive into Fun: What to Expect at a Dog Day at the Pool Event
As the summer winds down and community pools prepare to close for the season, there’s one last splash of fun left—Dog Day at the Pool! Also known as Dog Swim, Doggie Splash, Doggie Dip, Wade & Wag, Pooches at the Pool, Paws at the Pool, and so many more punny great names.
Whatever you call them, these events are popping up across Michigan, giving our four-legged friends a chance to enjoy the water before the pools close for the year. Whether it’s your pup’s first time or they’re seasoned swimmers, here’s how to make the most of this pawsome Dog Day at the pool.

Prepare for a Splashing Good Time – What to Pack
1. Safety First: Harness or Life Jacket Before you head to the pool, make sure your pup is geared up with either a harness or, better yet, a life jacket. Some pools don’t have a shallow end, so your dog might need help getting in and out of the water. A harness or life jacket gives you an extra hand (or paw) in keeping them safe and secure.
2. Hydration Station Even though your pup will be surrounded by water, don’t forget to bring fresh drinking water. All that swimming and playing can make them thirsty!
3. Toys for the Win Bring along your dog’s favorite water-friendly toy. Just keep in mind that other pups might be just as interested in it, so be ready to share!
4. Towel Time Pack towels to dry off your dog before they jump back into the car. Wet dogs can mean wet car seats, so a quick towel dry can save you some post-event clean-up.
5.Treats for Good Behavior Bringing treats is a great idea, but be cautious about where you store them. With so many dogs around, you don’t want to accidentally start a feeding frenzy!
6. Capture the Memories Don’t forget your camera or smartphone! These events are full of joyful moments, so be sure to snap a few photos of your pup living their best life.

Prepare for a Splashing Good Time – Before You Go
1. Pre-Pool Pit Stop Take your dog for a walk to do their business before entering the pool area. And just in case, bring along some dog bags—you never know when nature will call!
2. Nail Check Make sure your dog’s nails are trimmed before the event. This helps prevent scratches on the pool lining and keeps your pup comfortable. It will also help them get a better grip on slippery surfaces and when trying to get out of the pool.
3. Dress for the Occasion Wear waterproof shoes and be prepared to get wet—expect a few dogs to shake off right next to you! Sunscreen and sunglasses are also a must for yourself, as you’ll likely be spending a lot of time in the sun.
4. Confirm Records Some pools require proof of vaccination. Make sure you have everything you need

Poolside Etiquette
1. Mind the Gate When entering the pool area, use extreme caution to ensure no unleashed dogs slip out. A little extra care goes a long way in keeping all pups safe.
2. Supervision is Key While it’s tempting to chat with other pet parents, always keep an eye on your dog. With so many new friends around, it’s easy for your pup to get into mischief.
3. Don’t Push Your Dog into the Pool I know you want them to enjoy their swim session, but I think they’ll like it a lot more when it’s their choice to swim. Some dogs seem to have a blast just running around the pool area with their new besties.
4. Know Your Dog If your dog doesn’t play well with others, a dog day at the pool might not be the best fit. The environment can be overwhelming, so it’s important to consider your dog’s temperament before attending.
5. Dogs Only As much fun as it would be to swim with your dog, these events are for dogs only. And for good reason. If there is an accident in the pool the team will try to clean it up with nets, but that’s pretty difficult as you can imagine.

Poolside Etiquette
Dog day at the pool events are a fantastic way to wrap up summer with your pup. With a little preparation and a focus on safety, you and your pup can enjoy a day full of splashes, smiles, and memories that will last long after the pool has closed for the season. Check this one off the bucket list for the year!
